My experimental website

News Event Website XP

In early February, I had 2 weeks of free time between 2 contracts. No personnal project to finish, nothing ongoing, I was free. And that’s a rare thing (maybe a first).

I planned to invest it into learning something new. And I had no idea about what was about to happen .

It first started like “Hey, let’s make a placeholder for my company URL!” and ended up in sweat after a two week long coding spree.

I went a little berserk but it was plain fun, and now I have something uncommon on the web to show.

Why is it an uncommon website? Well, for several reasons:

  • I wanted to review my basics. So no JS library allowed. No CSS I wouldn’t write except normalize.css.

  • Any idea I had that would seem to make it more extraordinary had to be coded

  • In terms of technique, I wanted to use as many as I could.

The rationale? It would be “Let’s get better, and worst case scenario will be a pointless thing online that shows I can use many techniques in Web Developement. Better than a static placeholder.”.

Well, it certainly may be pointless, But I’m happy with it. I overcame …

Compress your Jekyll website without plugin

Jekyll Recipe

I have written a few articles about Jekyll because I was using it for this blog.

However, this is not a blog about Jekyll. For the next posts, I will focus on the vanilla techniques I used in the design of my experimental website (still a work in progress).

But before that, I want to draw your attention on this marvelous piece of code allowing to seemlessly compress your Jekyll website without any plugin (i.e. Github-Pages compliant).

And this is a 2 minute job, for a very satisfying result. Whatever your Jekyll website is, I don’t see a reason not to use it since it will drastically increase the speed of your website for almost no effort.

Here is how it goes.

First, you need to add a new layout to your application. Download the latest version of …

How Jekyll can do the job

Today I will show you how I automated my Jekyll deployments and why Jekyll roxx.

Even for regular git users like yours truely, this is a pain to use ten times a day (often more) the same lines of code. While there are tools to automate this, I wanted my own version. These are simple tasks and I don’t need extra software for that.

Morevover, I do have a thing going on with Jekyll. I love it. It’s a bit late, I agree, since the tech itself is getting old. But still. Show me something better and I will reconsider.

I am convinced that it can be easier to manage a Jekyll website than your typical wordpress website, as long a (decently) skilled developer designs it in the first place.

And it comes with a few side bonuses: it is more secure, it is static, the hosting is free with Github-Pages, this is fast, and you have a full record of every version …

Jekyll tags, the easy way

Jekyll Recipe Algorithms

Hello all,

Here is a small post to explain how I made the tags system for this Jekyll powered blog.

Many others have done it and I guess this is no big deal, but here it is, with a touch of the Neatastic flavor.

As you may know, I use Semantic-ui as front-end for this blog. It provides an handy tag element and several shortcut classes for colors.

So I decided to make a tag system for each post. At the time, I managed to make it on first try, just as I wanted it ( Jekyll). So I didn’t bother to check what others did.

It turns out, as you may expect, that they did things in a very similar way.

Here is the train of thoughts …

Creating a sticky post feature for Jekyll

Jekyll Recipe

Here is a short explanation of how I made that sticky post feature. It was actually quite straightforward.

But let’s start with a simple question: What is a sticky post?

A sticky post is a post that stays on the top of the others. If there is more than one, only the latest is considered sticky.

It is useful to make an editorial post or to highlight a particular content.

Here is how I made this feature.

First, you need to distinguish sticky posts from the others. For that, I added …
